Early April 2018, the Faculty of Law and Public Administration at Bir Zeit University – in collaboration with CILC – organized its annual international academic conference entitled “The Search for Environmental and Climate Justice in Palestine: National Laws and International Standards”. This conference was organized in the context of the project “Capacity Development in Higher Legal Education in Palestine”.
The conference provided a forum for expert presentations on legal developments in the area of climate protection and environmental justice, regulation and policies. It brought together researchers and practitioners from different legal backgrounds and judicial systems to foster international comparison and exchange. Highlights included discussions on mechanisms for protecting the environment in light of recent developments under international law and the role of international environmental law in regime setting with regard to protection from hazardous waste, wastewater and cross-border pollution.
The conference included the participation from Dutch professors and researchers from Utrecht University and VU Amsterdam, with Professor Dr. Philip Langbroek moderating a panel discussion on international environmental protection and Mr. Dr. Otto Spijkers presenting a “Successful Example of Public Interest Conflicts towards Environmental Protection”.
