“To continue legal cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands in the years to come, we need to involve the youth of today”. This was the key message of the workshop held by CILC on the 16th of October. The workshop was organized as part of the anniversary celebrating 50 years of legal cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. At the workshop, young professionals, students and members of the Indonesia Nederland Youth Society came together to discuss opportunities to strengthen youth engagement in legal cooperation.
Our focus, together with session leader Ms. Yuen Yen Tsai, was to create room for creativity through the process of flipthinking; a method in which challenges are looked at in terms of opportunity rather than problems. The participants discussed the opportunities and challenges that Indonesia faces in various sectors and themes, ranging from education, to technology and law. The workshop was a forum for creative ideas, a lot of laughter, energy and courage to state the “not-so-obvious” thoughts.

The workshop participants came from different backgrounds; varying in geographical regions, education systems, and religions. This created a unique blend of experiences, understandings and visions for the future of legal cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands.
The goal of the workshop was to involve youth in legal cooperation, let them share their vision. The youth are the future politicians, policy makers, judges and lawyers. “If the role of youth is disregarded, then there will be no cooperation in the future.” This was the message that Giras Bowo, a participant of the workshop, shared at the forum that took place at the Supreme Court the following day. Giving a stage to the workshop participants, involving them in the discussion, created an uplifting atmosphere during the forum and a gave a chance for the youth perspective to shine through.
