On Friday 21 April, the Minister of Justice of Montenegro, Mr. Marko Kovač, signed the Judgments Convention during a festive ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in The Hague.
The Judgments Convention, which will enter into force on 1 September 2023, establishes a common framework for the circulation of judgments in civil and commercial matters, overcoming the complexities arising from differences in legal systems. This international instrument increases legal certainty and predictability, which are essential elements for the promotion of the rule of law.
CILC is honoured to have been able to contribute to the promotion of the Judgments Convention in the Western Balkans region leading up to Montenegro’s signing of the Judgments Convention. Since 2020, CILC has worked on improving cross-border enforcement in the Western Balkans region in the framework of the Balkans Enforcement Strengthening Project, financed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Enhancement of regional and international cooperation, including the promotion of the Judgments Convention, is an important component in this project.
We are looking forward to continue the work on cross-border enforcement and the promotion of the Judgments Convention, together with our partners the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the International Union of Judicial Officers (UIHJ) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH!
