We are deeply saddened by the passing of Arabist and lawyer Laila al-Zwaini, who died on Saturday at the age of 59 after a prolonged illness. Laila was a valued contributor to our projects at CILC, where her expertise and perspective enriched our work and inspired those around her.
Born on July 6, 1965, in Eindhoven to a Dutch mother and Iraqi father, Laila dedicated her career to the study and practice of law in complex and fragile contexts. A specialist in Islamic law, Arab tribal systems, and women’s rights in the Islamic world, she brought a rare depth of knowledge to every endeavor. Her academic journey began at the University of Leiden, where she studied both law and Islamic studies, later continuing her work in the field through research and leadership roles across the Middle East.
Laila’s career spanned countries and disciplines, from academic research in Yemen to leading a United Nations rule of law mission in Afghanistan. She was not only a legal scholar but also a gifted communicator, often heard on Dutch national radio and seen in the media explaining nuanced issues from the Arab world with clarity, compassion, and context.
We are grateful to have known her and to have worked alongside her.
